Review: Nowadays, almost any smartphone or mobile phone that sees daylight comes with a dedicated software solution designed to help its new owner connect the device to his computer, synchronize data, transfer files, backup the content and so much more. Mobile Master is more than an app dedicated to a single brand of mobile devices, it tries to target most of them with advanced features and a nice and user-friendly interface. Its probably worth mentioning that Mobile Master supports the majority of mobile phone manufacturers, including Apple, Samsung, Nokia, Motorola, LG and Sony Ericsson, which means you should be able to use it no matter if you own a Samsung Galaxy S or a Nokia N97 mini. The program supports three different connectivity options, Bluetooth, IrDA and cable, but we usually go for the last one thanks to the high transfer rate it provides. Mobile Master has a lot to offer, starting with contact synchronization with Windows contacts, Outlook Express and Mozilla Thunderbird, and ending with file transfers and a SMS manager. Mobile Master works with a lot of mobile phones in the same way iTunes does with iPhones and iPods, so youll have to set dedicated folders for photos and videos, just to make sure synchronization will go instantly every time. Weve tested the app with a Samsung Galaxy S and cable connectivity and it all worked like a charm, but there are still some things to improve here and there. There are users who complain that synchronization works pretty slow sometimes, especially when working with contacts and a different tool than the ones mentioned above. But all things considered, Mobile Master is just a must-have program in case theres no dedicated tool to handle your mobile device.

Review: As the name of this program suggests, DAT to AVI Converter allows you to change the format of DAT videos into AVI. But it can convert MPG files to AVI as well. The interface of the tool is uncomplicated and easy to navigate through. Video clips can be imported with the help of only the file browser because the drag and drop method is not supported. Unfortunately, you cannot work with multiple items at the same time. So, you can preview clips in a built-in media player and cut them by marking the start and end position. Once you establish the output directory and filename from the Options area, you can initialize the conversion procedure with the default settings. Experienced users can tinker with the audio and video properties when it comes to the resize mode, frame rate, resolution and compressor. Unfortunately, you cannot create output profiles but it is possible to restore settings to their default values. The video conversion application requires a moderate amount of CPU and system memory, has a good response time and completes a job briefly. DAT to AVI Converter has not caused us any issues in our tests; it did not freeze, crash or pop up error dialogs. On the downside, you cannot specify the thread priority or make DAT to AVI Converter open the output directory when the task is done. The fact that batch processing is not supported is a major downside. The interface needs some improvements as well but we must keep in mind the fact that DAT to AVI Converter has not received any updates for a long time.

Review: Flash2Video is a software with a title that says it all - it can convert SWF files to several media formats, including AVI, MP4, MPEG, MP3 and WAV. The interface of the program is plain and simple. You can import SWFs by using the file browser (the drag and drop method is not supported). So, all you have to do is specify the output format and destination, and initiate the conversion process. In addition, you can configure settings when it comes to the compressor, video size, bit rate and frame rate, as well as audio sample frequency rate and bit rate. Furthermore, you can preview the source video (pause, navigate back and forth), select the speed mode (normal or overspeed), as well as the action after conversions are finished (do nothing, turn off the computer). During the encoding process you can view a progress bar, the current and total number of frames, as well as the source frame-per-second value. After the task is completed, Flash2Video automatically opens the output directory. The program uses a moderate-to-high amount of system resources and takes a while to convert a file. Last but not least, you can schedule a conversion task on any day of the current week, as well as enable the program to exit or turn off the computer when all jobs are done. 4U MP4 Video Converter runs on low-to-moderate system resources, includes a step-by-step tutorial with snapshots for rookies and take a reasonable amount of time to finish an encoding job. It can be easily installed and configured, even by inexperienced users. Once initialized, the program displays a very small frame on the screen which you can move to any spot; it shows the current language along with the current time in the digital format (in the 12-clock format). By opening the context menu, you can access the Options screen, in order to specify the key combination for switching between two language packs; these can be moved up and down in the list and customized in regard to the label, shortcut, sound and image file. Several customization properties are available for the appearance of R-WIN 2000 Keyboard Switch when it comes to the taskbar icon, floating window, style (e.g. gripper, border, clock, show seconds) and font. Plus, you can access the Region and Language area of Windows from the context menu. The application requires a very small amount of CPU and system memory, so it shouldn put a strain on the computers resources. It has a good response time and didn cause the operating system to freeze, crash or pop up error dialogs during our evaluation. On the other hand, R-WIN 2000 Keyboard Switch does not integrate any special features that cannot be otherwise configured through Windows default options. But it can be easily handled by all user levels, thanks to its intuitive layout and overall simplicity.
